Amazing picture mike bought for me off wish…pretty sure they are all fan art, but how cool is it? Some I don’t recognize, and I think it’s missing some of studio ghibli’s newer stuff, but still amazing…can’t wait to find an awkwardly long frame for it!
I caught another in a series of Studio Ghibli Characters‘s animation features by Hayao Miyazaki, “The Wind Rises”, a biopic about the designer of the WWII Japanese Zero fighter plane. It unashamedly follows the corny narrative arc of a typical Hollywood biopic of the 30s and 40s, with breathtakingly beautiful background scenes. It was a blast to watch. This was a version dubbed by all sorts of well-known Hollywood actors, whose voices I ordinarily can’t tell from the actors in a local dinner theater troupe when applied to animated characters. Except…I suddenly heard this condescendingly omniscient, heavily German-accented voice hissing from a German character, making pronouncements like, “Japan will be blown up…Germany will be blown up.” I thought, that couldn’t be Werner Herzog…but, who else? When the end credits rolled, sure enough, there was his name as that voice. For once, just for that thrill, I’m glad I saw the dubbed version. In the scene below, the clouds are racing in the opposite direction of the train, to cool effect.
I don’t usually do or finish emotional pieces of art, but with recent events I feel like it was the least I could do to dedicate myself to this – Inspired by Studio Ghibli‘s style. You never truly appreciate something until it’s almost gone. Catch up with your close ones, ask how they’re doing, more likely than not it’ll make their day.
